Softball Drops Pair of Games to Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass. — The Babson College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Bridgewater State University on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Junior Meaghan Merullo (Winchester, Mass.) hit a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to win game one, while sophomore Ali Reilly (New Canaan,) picked up a pair of victories on the day to lead the host Beavers.

The Beavers rallied for a 3-2 eight-inning win in the opener and then cruised to an 8-0 five-inning triumph in game two.

Babson, which has now won three straight games, is 8-6 on the year, while Bridgewater State falls to 7-9 overall.

Reilly went the distance in game one, giving up just one earned run on eight hits to go along with one strikeout for the Beavers.

Merullo finished the opener 2-for-3 at plate with two doubles, while sophomore Samantha Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Maya Lacy (East Mill Creek, Utah) also contributed two hits and classmate Rachel Bullard (Worcester, Mass.) added a double.

Freshman Jenny Heller (Taunton, Mass.) went 2-for-3, while junior Samantha LoPilato (Medford, Mass.) had an RBI double in game one for the Bears. Junior Kelly McCarthy (Burlington, Mass.) gave up two earned runs on 11 hits while striking out two in a complete-game effort.

Bridgewater State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when junior Courtney Leddy (Saugus, Mass.) led off with a single before coming around on a wild pitch with two outs. The Green and White, which left the bases loaded in the second and had runners on in every inning but the fourth, finally broke through in the last of the seventh. Lacy led off with a single to left and came around on Smith's two-out knock to right to force extra innings.

The Bears got a two-out RBi double from LoPilato to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth, but the Beavers rallied to win it in the bottom of the frame. Junior Leslie Moore (Atkinson, N.H.) singled to put runners on the corners and Merullo smashed a double to deep center field to complete the comeback.

Babson took a 1-0 lead in game two when Smith, who led off with a walk, came around to score on a two-out error. The Green and White doubled its advantage in the third as freshman Annie Quine (Santa Monica, Calif.) smacked a two-out double to the gap in right center to plate Bullard.

Bridgewater State loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fourth, but Reilly came on in relief of senior Madison Dinaso (Ardsley, N.Y.) and used a strikeout and a ground out to maintain the two-run advantage.

The Beavers then struck for five runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the frame. Junior Catherine Pitts (Winchester, Mass.) raced home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Nicole Civello (Huntington Station, N.Y.) to make it 3-0. Bullard and Smith came through with back-to-back run-scoring hits, and Smith and first-year Josephine Mares (Houston, Texas) both came around on an error following Quine's single to center for a 7-0 advantage.

Reilly, who struck out one over 1.2 innings to move to 5-4 on the year, drove home Lacy to end the game in the bottom of the fifth. She finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored.

Quine went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Bullard was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored for the Green and White.

Sophomore Alexandra Wright (Lakevile, Mass.) suffered the loss for the Bears after allowing three earned runs on three hits and two walks in 3.2 innings.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday as Babson travels to nationally-ranked Tufts for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m., while Bridgewater State visits Rhode Island College for a twin bill beginning at 4 p.m.
