Kelly McCarthy Named MASCAC Softball Pitcher of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University sophomore right-hander Kelly McCarthy has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Softball Pitcher of the Week.

McCarthy went 2-0 with a pair of complete game shutouts in two appearances in the circle for the Bears last week. The Burlington, Massachusetts product scattered eight hits in 14 innings of work with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.

McCarthy won both ends of a doubleheader in a MASCAC sweep of Fitchburg State University as she tossed a three-hitter in BSU's 4-0 win in game one and a five-hitter in the Bears' 3-0 victory in the nightcap.

In nine appearances this season including seven starts, McCarthy is 6-2 with five complete games, four shutouts and a 2.01 earned run average. She has fanned 35 batters in 48 2/3 innings and opponents are batting just .228 against her.

McCarthy is currently ranked third in the MASCAC in ERA and is tied for fourth in wins and tied for seventh in both complete games and strikeouts.

At the plate, McCarthy is batting .397 (31-78) with six doubles, three triples, a home run, 12 runs scored and 25 runs batted in. She is third in the conference in both RBI and slugging percentage (.590) and tied for second in triples. McCarthy is also seventh in batting, eighth in on base percentage (.397), tied for sixth in doubles and tied for seventh in hits.

The BSU softball team is 17-9 on the season and 7-3 in the MASCAC. The Bears entertain MCLA in a conference twinbill on Tuesday afternoon with game one getting underway at two.
