BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The visiting Trailblazers of MCLA swept a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) softball doubleheader with Bridgewater State University on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Park. The Trailblazers posted a 4-2 win in the opener and completed the sweep with a 4-1 victory in game two.

With the two wins, MCLA improves to 11-15 on the season and 8-2 in the MASCAC. The hosts Bears fall to 17-11 overall and 7-5 in conference play.

In game one, Rachel Quackenbush went the distance in the circle limiting the Bears to a pair of unearned runs. Quackenbush (6-6) scattered six hits, walked two and fanned seven.

Kelly McCarthy (6-3) suffered the loss for the Bears as she gave up four runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

The Trailblazers took advantage of a BSU mental error in the first to push across pair of runs. Michaela DiNicola walked to lead off the game, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third when Quackenbush reached on a fielder's choice grounder as the Bears attempted to get the lead runner. After a stolen base and a foul-out, Jennifer Sicinski plated both runners with a double to left field.

MCLA tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Amanda Meczywor reached on a base hit, stole second and scored on Alexandra Romano's RBI single. Angelica Perfido doubled with one out in the sixth, advanced to third on a ground out and trotted home on Juliana Watson's run-scoring single.

The Bears rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Courtney Leddy led of the frame with a base hit and moved to second two outs later on a bunt. Samantha LoPilato reached on an error to keep the inning alive with Leddy moving to third. A wild pitch gave the Bears their first run of the game and Jessica Laudati belted an RBI triple to deep centerfield to make it a 4-2 game.

Back-to-back singles by Jocelyn Bettencourt and Leddy with two outs in the seventh brought the winning run to the plate, but Quackenbush induced a soft foul out to end the game and secure the win for the Trailblazers.

Meczywor went 2-for-3 and scored what proved to be the winning run.

Leddy was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a run as she reached safely in all four plate appearances.

In game two, Meczywor (4-8) gave up just one run on six hits in five innings of work with a walk and two strikeouts. Quackenbush pitched the final two innings to earn her second save of the season as she gave up just one hit while allowing an inherited runner to score.

Kathleen Bailey was tagged with the loss in the circle for the Bears. Bailey (3-4) allowed three runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout. Alexandra Wright hurled the final two innings giving up a run on two hits with a strikeout.

The Trailblazers opened the scoring in the top of the third. With one out, Romano doubled and Quackenbush was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Following a productive ground out, Sicinski lined a two-run single into right-center to give MCLA the 2-0 lead.

Romano singled to start the fifth but was cut down trying to score on a double by Quackenbush. Quackenbush, who took third on the throw home, would score on a fielder's choice grounder to second as she beat the throw to the plate.

Back-to-back singles by Leddy and McCarthy to open the bottom of the sixth brought the tying run to the plate. Quackenbush came on in relief of Meczywor to stave off the rally. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third, LoPilato plated Leddy with an RBI ground out to put the Bears on the board. Quackenbush, however, got a big strikeout to strand McCarthy at third.

The Trailblazers answered in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Romano to make it a 4-1 game.

Quackenbush pitched a scoreless seventh to secure the win.

Romano went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI to highlight the MCLA offense in game two, while Welch reached safely in three plate appearances with two singles and a walk to pace the Bears.

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears entertain Babson College in a non-conference twinbill starting at three, while the Trailblazers host Salem State University in a MASCAC doubleheader beginning at two.
