Softball Splits MASCAC Twinibill with Salem State

SALEM, Mass. – Salem State and Bridgewater State earned a split in MASCAC softball action on Friday afternoon. The Vikings took game one 6-1, while the Bears rebounded with a 4-2 win in game two.

Salem State is now 11-5 (1-1 MASCAC) while Bridgewater State goes to 9-5 (1-1 MASCAC).
 
Game One
In the bottom of the first, Rebecca Krigman singled with the bases loaded that brought in Jen Toussaint and Marisa Sanchez as Salem took an early 2-0 advantage. The Bears got a run back in the top of the third with two doubles from Jocelyn Bettencourt and Kelly McCarthy to cut the deficit to 2-1.

After a scoreless fourth, Salem State opened the lead up to 6-1 off four hits including a Desiree Moreno double that scored Bobbie Dee Regan and Jess Raymond. Later that inning, Krigman also added a double to bring in Moreno and Courtney Kilgore extending the Vikings' margin to five runs.

Rachael Cyr cruised after allowing the run in the third. She kept the Bears off the board over the final four innings to earn the complete game win. Cyr (2-1) scattered eight hits and walked two.
 
Krigman finished the game 2-for-4 with four runs batted in. Karissa Pagan led the Bears going 3-for-3 in game one.
 
McCarthy (2-1) drew the loss as she went two innings allowing two runs on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Kathleen Bailey worked the last four innings giving up four runs on five hits with a walks and three strikeouts.
 
Game Two
The Bears struck early in game two, scoring three runs through the first two innings. Breanna Shaffer walked to lead off the game, stole second, advanced to third on a bunt and scored the game's first run on a Salem State error. In the second, Bridgewater State added two more runs on a Courtney Leddy single that brought in Schaffer and Jackie Welch.

Shaffer also singled to lead off the fourth, stole second and scored on McCarthy's RBI single to put the Bears up 4-0

Bears starting pitcher Iliana Rivera worked the first five innings to pick up the win. Rivera (4-2) allowed just one run on three hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.

Alexandra Wright pitched the final two innings to record her third save of the season. Wright gave up a run on two hits. She walked one and fanned two.

Francesca Perrault (Everett, MA) (6-3) hurled the first two innings for the Vikings in the loss. Perreault (6-3) was touched for three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks. Cyr finished the remaining five innings, allowing one run on five hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Shaffer went 2-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases and three runs scored to highlight the BSU offense in game two. Bettencourt (2-for-3) and McCarthy (2-for-3, RBI) also had two hits apiece.
 
Salem State will host the Rams of Suffolk University on April 6th in a doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m. Bridgewater State will travel to Lasell College for a doubleheader on April 7th starting at 3:00 p.m.
