McCarthy Tosses No-Hitter as Softball Wins Pair of Games

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Kelly McCarthy (Burlington, Mass.) tossed a five-inning, no-hitter to lead the Bridgewater State University softball team to an 8-0 victory over Mount Mary University on Monday afternoon. Earlier in the day, the Bears posted a 14-2 win in six innings over Wisconsin Lutheran College.

Bridgewater State improves to 4-2 on the young season with the two victories.

In the win over Mount Mary, McCarthy (1-1) allowed just a lead-off walk in the top of the first inning and then retired the final 15 batters of the game.  She finished with eight strikeouts.

The Bears banged out nine hits in the contest and took advantage of six Blue Angel errors.

Karissa Pagan (Brockton, Mass.) paced the BSU nine-hit attack as she went 3-for-3 with a double, a stolen base, three runs scored and an RBI. Pagan got the Bears on the board in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI double. She would later come around to score the third run of the frame on an RBI double by Jackie Welch (Hubbardston, Mass.).

Welch finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Bears, whille Jocelyn Bettencourt (Plymouth, Mass.) singled twice and walked in four plate appearances.  Bettencourt also stole a base.

Bridgewater added two runs in the fourth inning and closed out the game with three more in the fifth Four of the five runs were unearned as the Blue Angles committed two errors in the fourth and three in the fifth.  Pagan singled and scored in each of the two innings.

In the 14-2 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran, Jessica Laudati (Berkley, Mass.) went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBI to highlight the Bears' 14-hit attack.

Iliana Rivera (Naugatuck, Conn.) allowed two unearned runs on five hits while fanning seven in four innings of work to pick up the win in the circle. Rivera evens her record at 1-1 on the year.

Following a scoreless first frame, Bridgewater State jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Warriors with three runs in the second and two in the third. Welch knocked in two runs with a double in the second, while Tara McCann (Fall River, Mass.) and Laudati rapped back-to-back RBI doubles in the third.

The Warriors closed to within 5-2 in the third after Kaitlyn Robison (Andalusia, Ill.) reached safely on a bunt single, and later came around to score along with Dayan Gacgacao (Chicago, Ill.) on an errant throw.

BSU added to its lead in the fourth with four runs on five consecutive hits and put up a five spot in the sixth to put the game well out of reach.

With two outs and nobody on in the fourth, three successive singles by Courtney Leddy (Saugus, Mass.), McCann and Laudati plated one run. Samantha LoPilato (Medford, Mass.) followed with an RBI double and McCarthy capped off the frame with a two-run double.

A two-run throwing error followed by an RBI single by Bettencourt and a two-run single by Leddy accounted for the Bears' five-run sixth inning.

Alexandra Wright (Lakeville, Mass.) worked two hitless innings in relief of Rivera to close out the win. Wright walked two and fanned four.
