Softball Splits Pair of Games

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- The Bridgewater State University softball team split a pair of games on Sunday afternoon in Cape Coral, Florida.

The Bears (2-2) dropped a 10-1 decision in five innings to Montclair State University, but bounced back with a 5-4, nine-inning victory over Drew University.

Montclair State 10, Bridgewater State 1 (5 Inn.)

In the setback to Montclair, the Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Jessica Laudati (Berkley, Mass.) in the top of the first inning.

Melissa Rustemeyer (Colonia, N.J.) smacked a two-run double in the bottom half of the inning to put the Red Hawks on top to stay.

Noel Hodgins (Paramus, N.J.) added an RBI single in the second before Brianna Davidson (Monroe Township, N.J.) followed with a two-run homer making the score 5-1.

Montclair State put the finishing touches on the win with a five-run fifth inning.  Rustemeyer led off the frame with a solo home run, while Tina Ciacciarelli (Succasunna, N.J.) and Hodgins rapped run scoring singles.

Rustemeyer, Hodgins and Melany Zeller (Bloomfield, N.J.) had two hits apiece for MSU. Laudati paced the BSU offense as she went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Brooke Powers (Newton, N.J.) allowed a run in the first inning before throwing four scoreless frames to pick up the win for the Red Hawks. Powers (1-0) scattered six hits and struck out two.

Kelly McCarthy (Burlington, Mass.) suffered the loss in the circle for the Bears.  McCarthy (0-1) allowed seven runs on eight hits in four winnings of work. She also walked two and hit two batters.

Bridgewater State 5, Drew 4 (9 Inn.)

Samantha LoPilato's (Medford, Mass.) walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Bridgewater State to a 5-4 victory over Drew in the Bears' second game of the day.

Runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings staked the Bears to a 3-0 lead heading into the seventh.

Jackie Welch (Hubbardston, Mass.) reached on a two base throwing error in the third inning, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Jocelyn Bettencourt's (Plymouth, Mass.) sacrifice fly.

Karissa Pagan (Brockton, Mass.) opened the bottom of the fifth with a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Cassidy Morrow (Dighton, Mass.) followed with an infield single sending Pagan to third. Bettencourt then rapped a base hit up the middle to drive in Pagan and give the Bears a 2-0 lead.

In the sixth, Tara McCann (Fall River, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to open the frame and moved to second on Laudati's base hit.  After a double play line-out erased McCann, Pagan and Welch followed with back-to-back singles to bring home Laudati with the Bears' third run of the contest.

Kathleen Bailey (Bayport, N.Y.), who cruised through the first six innings, ran into trouble in the seventh.

Lauren Mastropierro (Randolph, N.J.) walked to lead off the frame and, one out later, Kate McNamara (Levittown, N.Y.) singled to bring the tying run to the plate.  Helen Mustafa (Union City, N.J.) then crushed a home run to dead centerfield to knot the score at 3-3. The Bears would get a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the frame, but Kristin Zeigler (Collegeville, Pa.) worked out of trouble to set up the international tie-breaker.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Drew struck first in the ninth on an RBI single by Danielle Martinez (Levittown, N.Y.).

A Drew fielding error allowed Pagan to score the tying run in the bottom half of the inning. Welch, who reached on the miscue, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on Bettencourt's bunt single. Bettencourt would continue on to second base on the play. After Welch was cut down at the plate on a fielder's choice grounder, Samantha LoPilato (Medford, Mass.) ended the game with walk-off double to score Bettencourt with the winning run.

Bailey worked the first seven innings allowing three runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. Alexandra Wright (Lakeville, Mass.) hurled two scoreless innings in relief to pick up her first collegiate win. Wright (1-0) gave up just one unearned run on one hit while fanning one.

Bettencourt paced the Bears' ten-hit attack as she went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Pagan finished with two hits and a pair of runs scored in four trips to the plate.

Amy Benedict (Howell, N.J.) allowed four hits and a walk over 4 1/3 innings while allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out one. Zeigler (0-1) took over in the fifth and took the loss on the mound after allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out one over 4 1/3 innings of work.

On Monday, the Bears take on Wisconsin Lutheran at 11:00 AM and Mount Mary University at one.
