Bailey Hurls Shutout as Softball Splits Pair of Games

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Kathleen Bailey (Bayport, N.Y.) tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the Bridgewater State University softball team to a season-opening 4-0 victory over Alverno College on Saturday afternoon in Fort Myers. The Bears dropped a 6-1 decision to the University of Minnesota Morris in their second game of the afternoon.

Bailey (1-0), who walked one and struck out six, gave up just a one-out single in the fifth inning.

The Bears (1-1) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth as Tara McCann (Fall River, Mass.) doubled to lead off the frame, moved to second on a grounder to second and scored on Samantha LoPilato's (Medford, Mass.) RBI ground out.

Bridgewater tacked on three runs in the sixth. Jocelyn Bettencourt (Plymouth, Mass.) got things started with a lead-off walk and advanced to third on McCann's double. Jessica Laudati (Berkley, Mass.) followed with a two-run triple to the alley in right-centerfield and then came home on LoPilato's second RBI ground out of the game.

McCann went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored to highlight the BSU offense, while Laudati and LoPilato each finished with two RBI.

In the setback to Minnesota Morris, the Bears finished with six hits and four walks but left nine runners on base.

Mackenzie Weatherly (Morris, Minn.) went the distance in the circle for the Cougars.  Weatherly (1-1) gave up just one unearned run while striking out four.

Gina Downie (White Bear Lake, Minn.) paced the Cougars' eight-hit attack as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Alex Anderson (Osakis, Minn.) also finished with multiple hits as she singled twice in four at bats. Cassie Sowada (Saint Paul, Minn.) walked three times and scored a run in four plate appearances.

Laudati and Breanna Shaffer (Plainville, Mass.) paced Bridgewater State with two hits apiece as they both finished 2-for-4 at the plate.

Iliana River (Naugatuck, Conn.) was tagged with the loss in the circle for the Bears.  Rivera worked the first four innings giving up six runs (one earned) on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
