Erika Smith

Coach Smith will be entering her fourth season as the Bears head coach after serving one season as an assistant on the staff.  Erika is a  2005 graduate of Bridgewater State where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education with a concentration in teaching.  She was also a three-sport athlete competing on the varsity field hockey and women's lacrosse teams as well as the club ice hockey team.  

Erika was a four-year starter and three-year captain on the field hockey team from 2000-2003.  She amassed 13 goals and 16 assists for a total of 42 points in 66 games and was named to both the MASCAC and Little East All-Conference Teams in each of her final three seasons. In 2004, she was selected as the Bridgewater State College Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Prior to coaching at BSC, Smith was an assistant field hockey coach at Bridgewater-Raynham High School during the fall of 2004.  She is also currently the head women's lacrosse coach at BSC as she was named to that position prior to the start of the 2006 lacrosse season.  Erika also coached lacrosse at Oliver Ames High School in Easton and has also worked at the South Shore Lacrosse Camp in Weymouth.

In her three seasons at the helm of the BSC field hockey program, Erika has posted a record of 31-27 which inlcludes a 16-6 mark in 2007 and an ECAC New England Tournament championship.  The Bears' 16 wins that year was the most in team history and for her efforts, Smith was selected as the MASCAC Coach of the year.  

A native of Raynham, Massachusetts, Smith is currently a Physical Education teacher at Brockton High School. She just recently received her Master's of Science degree in Physical Education from Bridgewater State.




Katie Balboni

Katie Balboni joins the BSC field hockey coaching staff in 2009. A native of Townsend, Massachusetts, Balboni played three seasons on the Bears' field hockey team from 2005 to 2007.  In 56 career games, she accumulated 18 goals and seven assists for a total of 43 points.  Six of her 18 career tallies were game-winners.

The field hockey program posted a record of 29-28 over the course of Balboni's career including a 16-6 mark during her senior season of 2007.  That year the Bears set the program record for wins in a season, and the team also captured the ECAC Division III New England Tournament Championship. Balboni was instrumental during the Bears' ECAC title run as she scored the game-winning goal in BSC's 1-0 semifinal win over Nichols College and again in the Bears' 1-0 championship game victory over St. Joseph's College.

In 2006 and again in 2007, Balboni was selected to the All-Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Field Hockey Team.  In 2008, she was chosen as the Student Leadership Award winner by the Bridgewater State Department of Athletics. Balboni also played two seasons on the BSC softball team in 2005 and 2006, and competed on the Bears' women's lacrosse team in 2007.

Coach Balboni is a 2008 graduate of Bridgewater State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management and Marketing.  She is currently a mathematics teacher at Brockton High School and will be entering her second season as an assistant varsity softball coach at Brockton.

This past summer, Katie worked at Career Explorations in Manhattan, New York for five weeks as she mentored 17 and 18-year old high school age students. She presently resides in South Boston, Mass., is currently enrolled in the Masters program for Secondary Education at UMass Boston.
