BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University sophomore defender Emelia Westwater has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week.

Westwater backstopped the Bears’ defensive effort in a pair of game last week including a 4-0 shutout victory over Dean College. The Attleboro, Massachusetts native helped limit scoring opportunities from her center back position and had a number of defensive blocks and tackles in the circle. She was also on the defensive corner unit that stopped all 14 corner attempts in a hard-fought 1-1 tie with Eastern Connecticut State University. Westwater and the BSU defense held Dean to just one shot in the shutout win.

The BSU field hockey team is currently 1-1-1 on the young season. The Bears entertain Anna Maria College on Thursday night at seven o'clock from Mazzaferro Field.
