Field Hockey Falls to Wellesley, 2-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College field hockey team posted a 2-0 non-conference victory over Bridgewater State University on Thursday afternoon at Wellesley's Turf Field.

Senior Nikki Sharkin (Summit, N.J.) and sophomore Haley Chrobock (Branchville, N.J.) each scored for the Blue who improve to 8-7 on the season. Wellesley controlled possession throughout the contest, outshooting the Bears 27-4.

The Blue scored both of their goals in a three-minute span late in the opening half. Chrobock netted her fourth of the season to make the score 1-0 in the 30th minute, depositing the ball into the cage after freshman Maya Sullivan (Cumberland, R.I.) corralled a rebound off a Sharkin shot and found the sophomore on the right post.

Wellesley would make the score 2-0 less then three minutes later when Sharkin scored her fifth goal of the season on a Wellesley corner. Senior Cat Anderson (Andover, Mass.) inserted the ball to Peterson who lifted it towards Sharkin in front of the BSU net. Sharkin then redirected the ball just across the goal line to double the lead.

BSU sophomore goalkeeper Allison Chappell (Raynham, Mass.) finished the game with 13 saves on 15 Wellesley shots on goal. For Wellesley, senior Lucy Hurlock (Needham, Mass.) and sophomore Maggie Connelly (Duxbury, Mass.) combined for the shutout, with Connelly making one save in the second half.

Senior Brittany Cullinane (Lunenburg, Mass.) and junior Tori O'Dea (South Dennis, Mass.) finished with two shots apiece to lead the Bears.

Wellesley returns to New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday with an 11:00 AM contest at Clark University. Bridgewater State will also be on the road on Saturday when they head to Salem State University for a noontime Little East Conference (LEC) matchup with the Vikings.
