Field Hockey Edged by UMass Dartmouth, 2-1

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Despite a late surge by the visiting Bridgewater State Bears, the UMass Dartmouth field hockey team was able to secure a Little East Conference victory at Cressy Field on Tuesday evening.

The Corsairs opened the scoring early in the contest, as sophomore Erin Kish (Littleton, Mass.) scored off a Jill Levrault (Somerset, Mass.) assist in the seventh minute. The opportunity started with an insert off a corner from sophomore Haley Donahay (Cranston, R.I.), as Levrault drove the ball from the top of the circle to Kish, who deflected it into the net.

Ten minutes later, Bridgewater State got on the board, when junior Brittany Cullinane (Lunenburg, Mass.) powered in an unassisted goal off a Bear breakaway to enter the break even. The goal marked Cullinane's team-leading ninth of the season.

In the second half, Levrault continued to propel the Corsairs, netting a score of her own with a long blast from the right side of the cage. The goal marked Levrault's tenth goal on the season, which tops the Corsair roster. On the night, Levrault registered a total of five shots to pace the UMD offense.

UMD was able to hold off a resurgence of the BSU offense late in the game, including six penalty corners and eight shots in the second stanza. Sophomore goalkeeper Allison Burke (Franklin, Mass.) made all three of her stops in the second half, while BSU's Kaylyn Allahyarian (Norwell, Mass.) equaled the save total with one in the first and two in the second.

With the loss, the Bears fall to 7-8 on the season and 4-5 in conference play. The Corsairs now sit 11-4 with a 7-2 slate in the LEC.

Next up for the Corsairs is LEC leader Keene State, as UMD hosts the Owls at 4 p.m. Bridgewater State will look to rebound in another LEC match of their own as they travel to Eastern Connecticut at noon.
