Cullinane's OT Winner Lifts Field Hockey to 1-0 Win

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Junior midfielder Brittany Cullinane (Lunenburg, Mass.) notched the game-winning goal in double overtime to lift the Bridgewater State University field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over visiting WPI in the season opener for both teams on Tuesday evening at Swenson Field.

BSU freshman goaltender Allison Chappell (Raynham, Mass.) was impressive in her collegiate debut as she made 12 saves to record her first career win and shutout.

After over 90 minutes of scoreless action, the Bears capitalized on a turnover which led to an odd-man rush. Senior midfielder Brittney Field (Hubbarston, Mass.) setup the game-winning strike as she slid a pass towards Cullinane who was stationed near the far post. Cullinane buried her shot into the left side of the net to give the hosts the dramatic win.

Senior netminder Lauren Puishys (Oxford, Mass.) played well in the setback for the visiting Engineers as she turned aside eight shots. WPI held a 15-13 edge in shots as well as an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.

In upcoming action, the Bears entertain Thomas College on Sunday afternoon at one while the Engineers host Simmons College on Saturday at noon.
