Miskiv Leads Field Hockey to 2-0 Shutout of Fitchburg State

FITCHBURG, Mass.  --  Senior forward Demi Miskiv (Centerville, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Bridgewater State University field hockey team to a 2-0 shutout victory over host Fitchburg State University in Little East Conference (LEC) action on Saturday evening at Elliot Field.

Bridgewater raced out to a quick lead just 28 seconds into the first half as Miskiv intercepted a pass and streaked up the middle of the field and deposited the ball into the back of the cage for her team-leading seventh tally of the season to put the Bears up 1-0.  Bridgewater would take the 1-0 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, the Bears doubled their lead (2-0) at the 41:06 mark when senior forward Carissa Vizakis (Bellingham, Mass.) took a feed from Miskiv and blasted a shot into the lower right corner of the net for her third marker of the year to cap the scoring.

Throughout the match, Bridgewater State controlled the offensive play, outshooting the Falcons by a 17-2 margin, while also holding an 8-1 advantage in penalty corners.

In the cage, junior Lucy Holewa (Londonderry, N.H.) collected seven stops for the Falcons in 59 minutes of work, while senior Kacie Sturgeon (Dartmouth, Mass.) made one save for Bridgewater State en-route to her sixth victory and fourth shutout of the season.  Sturgeon has posted nine shutouts in 21 career starts.

Miskiv now has 26 goals and eighth assist for 60 points in just two seasons at Bridgewater State.  She ranks sixth in both goals and scoring among the Bears' all-time leaders.

Fitchburg State (4-4, 0-3 LEC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to Eastern Connecticut State University for a contest starting at 4 p.m. Bridgewater State (6-2, 2-1 LEC) will visit Westfield State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
