Miskiv, Sturgeon Lead Field Hockey to 1-0 Little East Shutout of Southern Maine

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior forward Demi Miskiv (Centerville, Mass.) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season and senior goaltender Kacie Sturgeon(Dartmouth, Mass.) notched her second straight shutout as the Bridgewater State University field hockey team posted a 1-0  victory over the University of Southern Maine in the Little East Conference opener for both teams.

The host Bears improve to 3-1 (1-0 Little East) on the young season, while the Huskies slip to 3-3 (0-1 Little East).

After a scoreless first half, Miskiv netted the game-winner in the 46th minute as she ripped a shot from the top of the circle that eluded the Southern Maine netminder.  Miskiv has now scored 23 goals in 26 games since transferring to BSU prior to the 2012 season,

Sturgeon was forced to make just three saves as the BSU defense limited the Huskies to six shots and only three on frame.  The shutout marked her first of the season and sixth of her career.

Bridgewater held a 9-6 edge in shots as well as a decided 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.

USM freshman netminder Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine) turned aside four shots in the setback.

The Bears are off until next Saturday afternoon when they travel to Little East rival Keene State College for a 1:30 game with the Owls.  The Huskies head to non-conference foe Bowdoin College on Tuesday night to take on the Polar Bears at seven.
