Field Hockey Blanks Salve Regina, 2-0

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- Senior forwards Carissa Vizakis (Bellingham, Mass.) and Demi Miskiv (Centerville, Mass.) each scored first half goals, and senior goaltender Kacie Sturgeon (Dartmouth, Mass.) made ten saves, as the visiting Bridgewater State University field hockey team blanked Salve Regina University, 2-0, in non-league action at Gaudet Field in Middletown.

Bridgewater State gets its first road win of 2013 and improves to 12-6 all-time against Salve Regina.  The shutout marked Sturgeon's first of the season and sixth of her career.

Salve Regina managed more penalty corners (14-to-12), but was outshot by the visitors, 26-16.

Vizakis broke a scoreless tie with her third goal of the season at 27:45. Miskiv's third goal of the 2013 campaign at 31:53 made the score 2-0 before intermission. Miskiv has scored 22 goals in 25 games since transferring to BSU prior to the 2012 season, while Vizakis has amassed 17 goals during that span,

Junior Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) recorded 10 saves for the Seahawks.  Both keepers had five saves in each half.

Sturgeon, the reigning Little East Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, preserved the shutout with a big save in the 65th minute.  Salve would not attempt another shot the rest of the way.

Salve Regina (1-2) travels to Salem, Mass., on Thursday for another non-league game with the Vikings; Bridgewater State (2-1) hosts WPI on Thursday for the completion of a suspended game from September 3rd. The Bears lead the Engineers, 2-0, with seven minutes remaining in the first half.
