Miskiv's OT Winner Lifts Field Hockey to 2-1 Win Over Thomas

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior forward Demi Miskiv (Centerville, Mass.) notched a pair of goals including the game-winner in overtime to lift the Bridgewater State University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Thomas College on Sunday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The game marked the season-opener for the host Bears (1-0), while the Terriers even their 2013 season record at 1-1.

Miskiv, who potted 19 goals during the 2012 campaign, netted the game-winner with 3:16 remaining in overtime as she picked up a loose ball of the stick of teammate Jaclyn Holahan (South Yarmouth, Mass.) and rifled a shot inside the left post from ten yards out.

Miskiv had staked the Bears to a 1-0 lead late in the first half as she scored off a penalty shot.

Senior midfielder Lauren Hachey (Oakland, Maine) knotted the score at 1-1 for the Terriers less than five minutes into the second half with her second goals in as many days.  Hachey took a cross from sophomore forward Michelle Green (Winslow, Maine) just inside the half-circle and rifled a shot that beat the BSU netminder to the left side of the goal.

Senior goaltender Kacie Sturgeon (Dartmouth, Mass.) made six saves to record the win between the pipes for the Bears.  Sturgeon biggest stop of the afternoon came midway through the overtime period as she sprawled and used her right blocker to stop a breakaway bid.

Bridgewater held an 18-9 shot advantage for the game as well as a slight 14-12 edge in penalty corners.

Senior goalie Sofia Sourgiadakis (Littleton, N.H.) turned aside nine shots for the visitors.

In upcoming action, the Bears entertain the Engineers of WPI on Tuesday night at seven, while the Terriers travel to Bates College on Thursday evening to take on the Bobcats also at seven.
