Farland Leads Field Hockey to 2-1 Win over Westfield

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Junior midfielder Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) scored two goals to lead Bridgewater State University to a 2-1 victory over Westfield State University in a key Little East Conference field hockey game on Wednesday evening, Sept. 28.

Bridgewater boosted its overall record to 6-3 and evened its conference mark to 2-2. Westfield is 6-3 and 1-3.

Westfield opened the scoring with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half on an unassisted goal by freshman Kelly Kenney (Suffield, Conn.).

Farland tied the score with 1:06 remaining in the first half as she finished a shot by Beth Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) that was headed across the goal line. Phillips was credited with an assist.

Farland, who extended her goal scoring streak to five games, tallied the game-winning goal on a penalty stroke 4:19 into the second stanza. Farland snuck the penalty shot inside the left post, barely eluding a kick save by Owl goalie Amanda McCarthy (Franklin, Mass.).

McCarthy finished with eight saves and Bear netminder Cassie Johansen (Port Jefferson Station, NY) registered four saves, all in the second half.

Westfield outshot Bridgewater, 17-16, and also led in penalty corners, 12-4. The Owls were awarded two penalty corners after time had expired in the second period but they were unable to convert.

Notes: Farland has seven goals and two assists in the last five games.
