Field Hockey Drops 3-0 Decision to Southern Maine

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The University of Southern Maine field hockey team stretched their winning streak to four games as the visiting Huskies blanked Bridgewater State University, 3-0, in Little East Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Bridgewater.

Southern Maine improves to 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in Little East play.  Bridgewater slips to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the LEC.

Despite taking just two shots in the first half, the Huskies scored on both of them as junior forward Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine) and senior midfielder Bethany Bougie (Sanford, Maine) staked the visitors to a 2-0 lead at the intermission.  Bougie's marker came on a penalty stroke in the 21st minute.

Bridgewater outshot Southern Maine by a margin of 5-2 in the first half and held a 10-9 shot advantage for the game.  The Bears, however, could not solve USM sophomore keeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) who turned aside seven shots to post her third shutout of the season and the Huskies' fourth straight.

Senior forward Whitney McDaniel (Livermore, Maine) rounded out the scoring in the 49th minute with her team-leading third goal of the season.

BSU junior Cassie Johansen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and sophomore Kacie Sturgeon (Dartmouth, Mass.) combined to make five saves between the pipes for the Bears.

Bridgewater returns to the field on Tuesday night at 7:00 when the Bears host non-conference foe Babson College.  Southern Maine travels to Bowdoin College also on Tuesday to take on the Polar Bears at 6:00 PM.
