BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – In Little East
Conference field hockey action, the University of Southern Maine
Huskies defeated host Bridgewater State College, 2-1, this
afternoon in Bridgewater. With the loss, Bridgewater drops to 10-5
on the season and 6-4 in the Little East Conference. Southern Maine
improves to 12-5 overall and 8-2 in conference play.
The Bears need a win on the road against Plymouth State next
Saturday to assure themselves of a first round home game in the
Little East Tournament. Southern Maine is currently tied for second
place along with Plymouth in the conference standings.
Southern Maine jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a first half goal by junior forward Caitlin Albert (Scarborough, ME). Junior forward Alyssa Kraus (Standish, ME), who assisted on the Albert goal, increased the Huskies’ lead to 2-0 off a penalty corner in the 48th minute of play.
Trailing 2-0, BSC rallied in the 60th minute to cut deficit in half. Junior forward Kelly Duchemin (Mashpee, MA) notched her second goal of the season as she scored off a penalty corner. Freshman forward Sarah Noyes (Byfield, MA) registered her first collegiate point as she assisted on the Duchemin goal.
The Bears held a 13-12 advantage in both shots and penalty corners. Both teams did a very nice job of getting their shots on goal as all but two shots were on frame.
Southern Maine sophomore netminder Allie Hill (Cape Elizabeth, MA) made 9 saves in goal for the Huskies to earn her 12th win of the season. BSC senior Nicole Downs (Hanover, MA) also turned aside 9 shots between the pipes for the Bears.
Bridgewater is back in action on Tuesday evening as the Bears
travel to the University of New England for a 6 o’clock game
with the Nor’easters. Southern Maine is also on the road on
Tuesday as the Huskies head to Bowdoin College for a 5
o’clock game with the Polar Bears.
