Volleyball Sweeps Anna Maria Tri-Match

PAXTON, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University volleyball team swept a pair of matches at a tri-match hosted by Anna Maria College on Saturday at the Fuller Athletic center. The Bears posted a 3-0 victory (25-23, 25-20, 25-23) over host Anna Maria and completed the sweep with a 3-1 victory (25-16, 15-25, 25-12, 25-18) over Emmanuel College.

The Bears improve to 8-5 on the season with the two wins.

In the 3-0 sweep of Anna Maria, the Bears notched 14 aces and limited the AMCATS to a .024 hitting percentage. Junior middle hitter Abigail Reardon (Fairhaven, Mass.) notched nine kills and posted a match-best .467 hitting percentage to go along with two blocks (one solo) to lead the way for Bridgewater State. Freshman outside hitter Kim Gowell (Durham, N.H.) added nine kills and an ace for the Bears, while junior setter Bethany Votta (Cumberland, R.I.) checked in with a match-high 18 assists as well as four aces, and senior setter Savannah Quintal (Assonet, Mass.) contributed 16 assists, nine digs and a kill. Bridgewater also received five kills and a match-best five aces from freshman middle hitter Alexis Starks (Milford, Mass.), seven kills from senior right side Becca Whalen (Plymouth, Mass.) and three kills, three aces and seven digs from freshman outside hitter Sarah Brogioli (Milford, Mass.).

In the 3-1 victory over Emmanuel, the Bears recorded 14 aces, ten blocks and a .250 hitting percentage while limiting the Saints to a .021 hitting percentage. Whalen registered nine kills and a .350 hitting percentage to go along with five blocks (one solo), while Gowell smacked eight kills and junior libero Victoria Caiano (Acushnet, Mass.) tallied a match high 11 digs and four aces as well as seven assists. Quintal and Votta combined for 26 assists, six aces and eight digs, while Starks filled the stat sheet with five kills, three aces, four digs and a match and career-high seven assisted blocks. Bridgewater also received five kills, an ace and four digs from Brogioli, five kills and two blocks (one solo) from Reardon, and five kills and a career-high four assisted blocks from Meaghan Coutu (Brookline, N.H.).

The Bears travel to Mass. Maritime Academy on Tuesday evening for a seven o'clock MASCAC match with the Buccaneers.
