Volleyball Falls to Smith, 3-0, at Bonnie May Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Smith College posted a 3-0 decision over visiting Bridgewater State University on Saturday morning at the Bonnie May Invitational. Smith won by set scores of 25-17, 25-11 and 25-17.

The host Pioneers improve to 5-1 on the season, while the Bears fall to 1-2.

Smith posted a .276 hitting percentage for the match and recorded 15 aces with eight serving errors. The Pioneers limited the Bears to a .047 hitting percentage and four aces.

Senior middle hitter Ava Zollinger (Orlando, Fla.) and sophomore opposite Abby Sweeney (Spring, Texas) notched six kills apiece for the Pioneers with Zollinger adding five digs. Freshman middle blocker Claudia Poehlmann (Chicago, Ill.) checked in with four kills and a pair of solo blocks, while junior defensive specialist Gabby Beckman (Aurora, Colo.) contributed 12 digs and two aces. The Smith setting tandem of sophomore Nathalie Pak (Lexington, Mass.) and freshman Sophia Padilla (Fontana, Calif.) combined for 30 assists and eight aces. Padilla registered a match-high six aces.

Freshman middle hitter Rachel Sebastian-Asbed (St. Louis, Mo.) paced Bridgewater State with a match-best eight kills and a .538 hitting percentage to go along with three blocks (one solo). Senior setter Savannah Quintal (Assonet, Mass.) notched eight assists, a pair of kills, one ace and three digs. Graduate outside hitter Julia Cabral (Acushnet, Mass.) contributed four kills, a .444 hitting percentage and four digs, while junior outside hitter Abigail Reardon (Fairhaven, Mass.) tallied two aces and two blocks (one solo). Junior libero Victoria Caiano (Acushnet, Mass.) checked in with seven digs and an ace.

In upcoming action, the Bears open Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) play at home against Fitchburg State University on Tuesday night at six o'clock.
