Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match with Wheaton & Mount Holyoke

NORTON, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University volleyball team swept a tri-match with Mount Holyoke College and host Wheaton College on Saturdau afternoon.  The Bears won both matches in five sets as they came away with a pair of 3-2 victories.

In BSU's first match of the day against Mount Holyoke, the Bears overcame a 2-1 deficit to come away the win (22-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 15-11).

Junior middle hitter Shelly DePina (New Bedford, Mass.) paced Bridgewater with 18 kills, three blocks and two aces.  Freshman setter Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass.) added 26 assists and two aces, while senior outside hitter Kristina Campbell (Taunton, Mass.) notched seven kills and three aces. 

In the nightcap versus Wheaton (25-20, 21-25, 25-16, 20-25, 15-8), senior outside hitter Julie Clerc (Acushnet, Mass.) tallied 13 kills and a pair of aces.  Appleman finished with 37 assists, DePina notched 10 kills and an ace, and Campbell added four more aces.  Sophomore Jennifer Shaw (Brockton, Mass.) registered 31 digs in the tri-match including 18 in the win over the Lyons.

In the match not involving Bridgewater State, Wheaton downed Mount Holyoke, 3-2 (25-23, 25-17, 21-25, 25-27, 15-11).

The Bears (4-3) travel to Roger Williams University on Tuesday night for a 7 o'clock match with the Hawks.
