Women's Tennis Blanks Western Connecticut, 9-0

DANBURY, Conn. -- The visiting Bridgewater State University women's tennis team posted a 9-0 victory over Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) match on Tuesday afternoon at the Westside Tennis Courts.

The Bears, who swept all three doubles matches and each of the six singles flights, improve to 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in the Little East with the win. The host Wolves fall to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Bridgewater State is 18-3 versus WestConn since the Bears joined the LEC in 2004.

In doubles play, senior Meghan Lotti (Stoneham, Mass.) and sophomore Samantha Bettencourt (Tiverton, R.I.) got the Bears on the board with an 8-0 win at the third spot while senior Madeline Von Ruden (Ashley Falls, Mass.) and graduate student Mackenzie Silveira (Middletown, R.I.) teamed for an 8-4 victory at number one. The freshman pairing of Aislyn Kelliher (Plymouth, Mass.) and Morgan Smith (Taunton, Mass.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-7 (7-5) decision at the second flight.

Freshman Sarah Pothier (Rochester, Mass.) earned a 6-1, 6-1 straight set triumph at #5 singles and Silveira followed with a 6-0, 6-2 straight set win at the second flight to secure the decisive fifth point for the Bears.

Bridgewater also received straight set singles wins from Von Ruden at the top spot (6-4, 6-2), Lotti at the second flight (6-3, 7-6), Kelliher at number four (6-3, 6-4) and Bettencourt at number six (6-3, 6-1). Lotti won her second set with a 7-3 tiebreaker.

Kelliher is now 5-0 in singles play on the season.

The Bears travel to Roger Williams University on Thursday afternoon for a four o'clock match with the Hawks.
