Women's Tennis Blanks LEC Foe Southern Maine, 9-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team breezed to a 9-0 victory over Little East Conference rival University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.

The defending Little East champion Bears improve to 3-2 on the season and 2-0 in the LEC, while the visiting Huskies fall to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Bridgewater swept all three doubles flights and all six singles matches to record the conference victory.

The Bears received doubles wins from seniors Alisha Silva (Taunton, Mass.) and Amanda Strickland (Plymouth, Mass.) at number one (8-0), seniors Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass.) and Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass.) at the second flight (8-1) and sophomore Angelique Gray (Osterville, Mass.) and junior Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) at the third spot (8-0).

In singles play, Silva (6-0, 6-0), Roman (6-0, 6-0), Scagnelli (6-0, 6-1), Strickland (6-0, 6-0) and Gray (6-4, 6-1) all won in straight sets at the first through fifth flights, respectively. Freshman Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) capped off the Bears' straight set wins with a 6-2, 6-1 decision at number six.

The Little East schedule continues for the Bears on Tuesday afternoon when they host Rhode Island College at 3:30. The Huskies entertain LEC foe Western Connecticut State University tomorrow morning at 10:30.
