BRIDGEWATER,
Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's tennis
team posted an 8-1 win over Gordon College in the
season-opening match for both teams.
The Bears (1-0) swept
all three doubles matches and took five of the six singles flights
to come away with the victory.
Senior co-captain Jessica
Francis (West Barnstable, Mass.) posted a 6-4, 6-1
straight set win at number two singles and teamed with fellow
captain Lauren
Donnelly (Centerville, Mass.) for an 8-0 triumph at
the top doubles flight.
Freshman Jenna Williamson
(Ludlow, Mass.) made the most of her collegiate debut as she
paired with sophomore Lauren Hopp
(Dartmouth, Mass.) for an 8-5 victory at second doubles and
breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 straight set decision at number three
singles. Hopp, who appeared in two doubles matches last
season, also recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win in her first
collegiate singles match competing at the sixth spot.
Sophomore Julie Kraby
(Wrentham, Mass.) and junior Bridget
Murphy (Mattapoisett, Mass.) rounded out the
Bears' point winners. The duo posted an 8-3 decision at the
third doubles flight and came away with singles wins at
the fourth and fifth flights respectively.
Freshman Katherine Stephens (El
Paso, Texas) battled to a 6-3, 6-2 straight set victory at the top
singles flight for the Fighting Scots (0-1).
Bridgewater State will return
to the courts on Tuesday, September 7th as the Bears
host Johnson & Wales University at 3:30 PM. Gordon
travels to Bristol, Rhode Island on Saturday to take on
Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Roger Williams University at 1

Notes: This was the first contest
for any Bridgewater State athletics team since the school recently
converted to university status.
