Simard Tops One-Meter Record, Relay Squad Sets School Mark During Day Two of Little East Championships

By Jim Fenton

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University junior Cailey Simard (Haverhill, Mass.) continued her streak of breaking school and Little East Conference championship meet records.

Simard established a new mark in the 11-dive 1-meter event on Friday night at the Boston Sports Institute.

Competing in the preliminary round, Simard advanced to the final with 479.55 points. A year ago, Simard set Little East and BSU records with 464.20 points.

Simard will bid for a sixth conference diving championship in six attempts when the finals of the 1-meter event takes place on Saturday.

Second place in the preliminaries went to Riley Mahoney of Husson University with 364.55 points.

On Thursday night when the conference championship meet opened, Simard defended her 3-meter title with 485.35 points to break her Little East and BSU marks.

The BSU 200 freestyle relay team featuring seniors Olivia Pelletier (East Kingston, N.H.), Renee Goodale (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) and Jenna Fiebiger (Johannesburg, South Africa), and graduate student Brynn Murray (Chelmsford, Mass.) captured the meet title with a time of 1:42.59, edging Eastern Connecticut State.

Fiebiger was also second in the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.50 seconds, and swam a leg on the Bears' third-place and school record-breaking 400 medley relay squad along with classmate Summer Martin (Norton, Mass.) and juniors Julie Remson (Norwalk, Conn.) and Ava Fenton (Bourne, Mass.). The quartet posted a school-record time of 4:11.08 eclipsing the previous BSU standard of 4:17.33 set 17 years ago in 2008.

Fenton also place third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:04.45.

Fiebiger, Fenton and the two relay teams earned All-Little East honors by placing in the top three at the championship meet.

With two days remaining in the conference meet, BSU is in second place with 260 points.

Keene State is in the lead with 282 points while defending champion Eastern Connecticut is third with 259 points.
