Women's Soccer Falls to UMass Boston, 1-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The visiting UMass Boston women's soccer team edged Bridgewater State University, 1-0, on Wednesday night at Swenson Field.

The Beacons improve to 7-8-2 on the season, while the Bears fall to 9-5-2. UMass now holds a 9-2-1 advantage in the all-time series as the two teams first met in 2010.

Sophomore midfielder Caroline Golt (Crystal Lake, Ill.) scored the game's only goal, her first of the season, in the 18th minute. Off a scramble inside the 18 following a UMB corner kick, freshman midfielder Callia Easton (Mashpee, Mass.) turned and fired a shot that deflected off a BSU defender. The ball went right to Golt who chipped a shot off the outstretched fingertips of the BSU netminder and into the back of the net.

The Bears finished with a 17-14 shot advantage for the game. However, only six of the Bears' 17 shots were on frame. BSU senior forward Michelle Belcher (Norton, Mass.) led all players with six shots including four on net.

The Beacons held a 6-4 edge in corner kick attempts.

Senior goalkeeper Maria Spylios (Leominster, Mass.) made six saves between the pipes for UMass as she notched her sixth win of the season and fifth shutout. Freshman netminder Logan Levesque (Bristol, R.I.) turned aside six shots in the setback for Bridgewater State. The Bears also received a team save in the 42nd off a corner kick as a BSU defender, stationed next to the far post, stopped a shot by UMB senior defender Ailaina Keely (Biddeford, Maine).

Both teams wrap up regular season play on Saturday afternoon. The Bears travel to MCLA for a noontime MASCAC game with the Trailblazers. The Beacons head to Castleton University for a 4:30 Little East matchup with the Spartans.
