PROVIDENCE, RI -- Senior forward Kaitlin Lamothe (Wrentham, MA) scored a pair of goals to lead the Bridgewater State College women's soccer team to a 4-2 win over host Rhode Island College this afternoon in Providence.
The Bears, who tallied the first four goals of the game, raise their current unbeaten streak to four games (2-0-2) and their overall mark to 2-1-2. The Anchorwomen suffer their seventh consecutive loss, dropping to 1-8.
RIC mounted a late comeback, scoring twice in a 38-second time span, but could not overcome the four-goal deficit.
Bridgewater jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on Lamothe's two goals in the 15th and 21st minutes, respectively. She notched her fourth goal of the season off a corner kick that was started by junior midfielder Christine Soucy (Rockland, MA). Her drive from the flag was headed off the post by senior midfielder Casey McDonough (Whitman, MA) and Lamothe collected the carom and deposited it into the vacant net.
Lamother scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season 6:10 later, burying a crossing pass from junior midfielder Jacklyn Wisocky (Brockton, MA). Wisocky netted her second goal on the campaign in the 24th minute on a nice setup from senior midfielder Julie Sullivan (Whitman, MA) to give the Bears a 3-0 lead at halftime.
The Bears added another insurance goal in the 58th minute as Soucy scored her first marker of the season off an assist by sophomore defender Amanda Vigneault (Ludlow, MA).
With Bridgewater State's reserves in the game, the Anchorwomen looked to make an improbable comeback. Junior midfielder Christina Tavana (Middletown, CT) took a free kick that was initially stopped by BSC senior goalkeeper Ashley Spingler (West Springfield, MA)s Sophomore midfielder Alicia Lardaro (Peace Dale, RI) collected the rebound and scored her first collegiate goal in the 82nd minute.
RIC caught the Bears off guard 38 seconds later as Tavana's corner kick bent into the net to cut the deficit to two. Senior midfielder Kayla Fleming's (Pawtucket, RI) breakaway bid was stopped by a sliding Spingler to preserve the lead in the waning moments of regulation.
Spingler made seven saves to earn her second (2-0) win of the season. RIC sophomore netminder Maddie Pirri (Bristol, RI) was forced to make a season-high 14 saves as her record falls to 1-8.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference play with a noontime start at home against UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, Sept. 27. Bridgewater State host MIT in a non-conference tilt on Thursday afternoon at 4.
