SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Sixteen members of the Bridgewater State University wrestling team competed on Sunday at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Futures Tournament hosted by Western New England University.
Freshman Christopher Dubey (Lowell, Mass.) paced the Bears with three wins on the day.
Dubey went 3-2 out of the 133-pound weight class. The Lowell, Massachusetts product opened the day with an 11-8 win over Liam Night of the University of Southern Maine followed by a 6-2 decision against Trey Kaupp of Roger Williams University. After losing by technical fall (15-0) to Coast Guard's Jake Bennett, Dubey bounced back with a 6-3 win over Western New England's Trevor Young before falling (0:34) to Hughes Patrick of New England College in the consolation semifinals.
Sophomores Vincent Player (Duxbury, Mass.) and Adam Distasio (Hopkinton, Mass.) were the other BSU grapplers with multiple wins.
Player posted a 2-2 record at the 184-pound weight class. He pinned (6:13) his first opponent, Roman Maritinez of Wesleyan University, to pick up his first win of the season, before losing by technical fall (22-7) to Corbin Moraia of Vermont State Castleton. After cruising to a 15-0 technical fall victory against Castleton's Cormac Horlbogen, Player lost by medical forfeit against Castleton's Cruz Henton.
Distasio, who went 2-2 out of the 133-pound weight class, bounced back from an opening round technical fall (20-3) setback to Young with back-to-back wins by decision over Southern Maine's Vinny Keeler (8-1) and Roger Williams' Maceo Eramo (3-0). He ended the day with a technical fall (17-0) loss to Western New England's Joe Weikel.
Bridgewater finished in 15th place in the team standings with 11 points.
The Bears will compete at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Tournament on Saturday, March 1st and Sunday, March 2nd at Wesleyan.
