Women's Basketball Falls to UNE in Hampton Inn Tip-Off Tournament Consolation Game

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The Bridgewater State University women's basketball team dropped a 63-55 decision to host University of New England in the consolation game of the 2018 Hampton Inn Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Nor'easters improve to 2-2 on the season while the Bears fall to 0-3.

Junior guard Jocelyn Chaput (Nashua, N.H.) paced UNE with 16 points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals, while freshman guard Abby Cavallaro (South Portland, Maine) notched 13 points, four boards, two assists and two steals. Junior guard Ashley Coneys (Dover, N.H.) added 11 points, four caroms, two assists and four steals.

Chaput was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Nor'easters recorded 16 steals for the game and forced 29 BSU turnovers. UNE shot 37% (21-57) from the floor, 20% (4-20) from three-point range and 73% (16-22) at the free throw line.

Senior guard Olivia DelGrosso (Ledyard, Conn.) led the way for Bridgewater State with 16 points as she garnered All-Tournament honors. Senior forward Kailyn Aguiar (Acushnet, Mass.) filled the stat sheet with ten points, nine rebounds (four offensive), four assists and three steals, while junior forward Kayla Carter (Beverly, Mass.) checked in with 11 points and seven boards.

The Bears shot 35% (17-49) from the floor, 26% (5-19) from three-point range and 70% (14-20) at the free throw line.

Bridgewater led 25-21 following a Nicole Bostick (Taunton, Mass.) three-pointer with 3:29 remaining in the second quarter. UNE, however, closed out the first half with an 11-1 run to take a 32-26 advantage into the break. Freshman guard Allie Goodman (Durham, Maine) scored six points during the run including a jumper at the buzzer, while Chaput tallied four points.

The Bears pulled to within one, 41-40, after senior guard Sara DaSilva (Chelmsford, Mass.) made 1 of 2 free throws with two minutes left to play in the third quarter. The Nor'easters reeled off seven straight points highlighted by a Cavallaro trifecta to extend their advantage to 48-40 heading into the final period.

Neither team found the basket in the opening minute of the fourth quarter before Coneys broke the ice with a layup to give UNE a ten-point lead (50-40). Bridgewater would get no closer than five points the rest of the way.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday evening at 5:30. The Bears travel to Rhode Island College, while the Nor'easters host #2 Bowdoin College.
