Women's Basketball Drops 83-51 Decision to UMD

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Junior forward Nakira Examond (New Bedford, Mass.) scored 23 points and senior forward Alicia Kutil (Franklin, Mass.) added 21 to lead the visiting UMass Dartmouth women's basketball team to a convincing 83-51 non-conference victory over Bridgewater State University on Tuesday night at the Tinsley Center.

The Corsairs, who received votes in the latest D3hoops.com and WBCA Division III Coaches polls, improve to 3-1 on the season. The host Bears fall to 1-3. 

UMass jumped out to an 11-2 lead and never looked back. The Corsairs led 38-17 at the break and got by as many as 25 points (47-22) in the third quarter and 33 (81-48) late in the fourth.

Examond connected on 9 of 12 field goal attempts and went 5-for-8 from the free throw line. She also grabbed nine rebounds, including three offensive boards.

Kutil knocked down 8 of 11 field goals and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the charity stripe. She also added six rebounds and five assists.

Senior guard Leah Douty (Framingham, Mass.) rounded out the Corsairs' double-digit scorers. Douty finished with ten points to go along with four rebounds.

BSU senior forward Chanelle Melton (Brockton, Mass.) paced the Bears with 12 points and three steals in 17 minutes off the bench, while junior guard Sara DaSilva (Chelmsford, Mass.) contributed eight points, four rebounds and four assists.

UMass shot 58% (34-59) from the floor and finished 12-for-19 (63%) at the free throw line. Bridgewater struggled with its shooting as the Bears connected on just 32% (20-62) of their field goal attempts and went 8-for-17 (47%) at the line. Each team committed 16 turnovers and there were 36 fouls called in the game. The Corsairs held a decided 50-20 advantage for points in the paint.

In upcoming action, Bridgewater State will compete at the Williams College Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Bears take on host Williams on Friday night at eight o'clock and Tufts University on Saturday afternoon at one. Tufts is ranked #1 in the most recent D3hoops.com Poll and #2 in the WBCA Division III Coaches Poll. UMass travels to Bowdoin College on Thursday evening for a seven o'clock game with the Polar Bears.
