
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University sophomore third baseman Sydney Schaefer has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Softball Player of the Week.
A native of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, Schaefer batted .600 (6-10) with five doubles, four walks, a run and six RBI in a 2-2 week for the Bears. She also posted a .667 slugging percentage and a 1.100 slugging percentage, and flawlessly recorded 14 chances (6 PO, 8 A) in the field at third base.
Schaefer went 4-for-5 with three doubles, two walks, a run and two RBI in a non-conference doubleheader split with Bates; and 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two walks, a sacrifice fly and four RBI in a MASCAC twinbill split with Framingham State.
Through 14 games this season, Schaefer is batting .359 (14-39) with eight doubles, a triple, seven walks, a stolen base, four runs and 12 RBI. She also checks in with a .447 on base percentage as well as a .615 slugging percentage, and has an impressive .980 fielding percentage.
Schaefer is tied for the MASCAC lead in doubles and ranks sixth in extra base hits (9). She is also tied for seventh in walks and is tenth among the conference leaders in slugging percentage.
In 51 games over her first two seasons with the Bears, Schaefer has a career slash line of .381/.435/.893 with 19 doubles, three triples, 17 walks, nine stolen bases, 21 runs and 40 RBI.
The MASCAC Player of the Week honor marks the first of Schaefer's career. She was named MASCAC Rookie of the Week in March of 2024.
The BSU softball team is currently 8-6 on the season and 1-1 in the MASCAC. The Bears entertain the Beacons of UMass Boston in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon with game one getting underway at three o'clock.
