Softball Sweeps Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Senior Amber White (Middleboro, Mass.) tossed a complete-game shutout in game one, and first-year Jennifer Galavotti (Marion, Mass.) capped a five-run first inning in the nightcap with a three-run homer as visiting Bridgewater State University swept Babson College in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field. The Bears slipped past the Beavers 1-0 in the opener and then took game two 8-1.

Bridgewater State, which has now won 10 of its last 12 games, moves to 17-9, while Babson, which has dropped five straight, falls to 13-14 overall.

White and Beavers' senior Kathleen Conway (Simsbury, Conn.) both put together dominating performances in game one, holding the offenses to a combined five hits and just a pair of walks. White struck out six of the first nine hitters and retired 15 straight to open the game, while Conway retired 11 straight after allowing a one-out single in the second, and struck out the side in both the third and fourth innings.

Babson had a chance to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth as first-year Leslie Moore (Atkinson, N.H.) reached on a two-base error and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, but was later thrown out at the plate on a one-out squeeze bunt. White also worked out of a second and third, two-out jam in the sixth with a strikeout.

Conway got two quick outs in the top of the seventh, but junior Jessica Laudati (Berkley, Mass.) and senior Jill Welch (Hubbardston, Mass.) came through with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. One batter later, Laudatti raced home on a wild pitch to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

Moore led off the bottom of the frame with a single to break up White's no-hit bid, but was caught stealing one batter later. Junior Lindsey Schmid (New Canaan, Conn.) reached with a one-out double, but White got a pop up and a ground out to retire the side and secure the win.

White (13-2) allowed just two hits while striking out eight and walking one to record her eighth shutout of the season and 22nd in a BSU uniform.  She is two shutouts shy of Amanda Sanson's (1999-2002) program mark of 24.  White, who extended her scoreless inning streak to 25, also moved into third place on the Bears' all-time strikeouts list.  She has fanned 353 batters in three seasons at Bridgewater State.

Conway (8-3), who suffered the hard-luck loss, gave up three hits and struck out 10.

Bridgewater State wasted little time in grabbing control of the nightcap, taking advantage of five hits and a walk in the top of the first to grab a 5-0 lead. Sophomore Karissa Pagan (Brockton, Mass.) followed a walk to junior Jocelyn Bettencourt (Plymouth, Mass.) with an RBI double to make it 1-0, and freshman Tara McCann (Fall River, Mass.) then smacked a single up the middle to plate Bettencourt for a two-run lead. Laudati singled up the middle to put runners on first and second, and two batters later, Galavotti blasted a three-run homer over the right field fence.

The Bears pushed the lead to 7-0 on a two-run double by Laudati to left center with one out in the second, which was more than enough for first-year Iliana Rivera (Naugatuck, Conn.), who tossed a complete-game three hitter and worked around four walks to move to 3-1 on the year.

Schmid doubled and scored the Beavers only run of the game on a groundout by junior Nicole Ravetier (Cranford, N.J.) in the fourth inning.

Laudati had four hits in game two and Pagan contributed three to pace Bridgewater State's 15-hit attack in the nightcap. Bettencourt and Pagan each scored a pair of runs as well.

Junior Meghan Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J.) suffered the loss for Babson, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks in an inning of work. Senior Tess Rubega (Norwich, Conn.) and first-year Abbey Schulz (Red Bank, N.J.) both threw three innings, giving up one run apiece.

Babson returns to action on Friday when it welcomes Emerson to Alumni Field for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m., while Bridgewater State hosts Salem State in a doubleheader on Saturday staring at 12 p.m.
