White Leads Softball to 3-2 Win over Kenyon; Bears Fall 8-0 to St. John Fisher

Bridgewater State 3, Kenyon 2 (9 Inn.)

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior pitcher Amber White (Middleboro, Mass.) tossed a complete game and helped her own cause with the bat to lead the Bridgewater State University softball team to a season-opening 3-2 victory in nine innings over Kenyon College on Saturday morning.

With the win, the Bears (1-0) snapped Kenyon's seven-game winning streak to open the season.

White gave up just two unearned runs on five hits in nine innings of work as she picked up her first win of the season.  She also doubled twice in four at bats including a big RBI two-bagger in the top of the ninth which gave the Bears a 2-1 lead.

Kenyon (7-1) got on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the first as the Ladies took advantage of a pair of BSU miscues in the frame.

The Bears tied it up in the top of the third as junior shortstop Jocelyn Bettencourt (Plymouth, Mass.) reached on a bunt single with one out, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on freshman third baseman Tara McCann's (Fall River, Mass.) RBI single.

The score remained tied at 1-1 until the ninth.  With two outs and Bettencourt on second (due to the NCAA extra inning tie-breaker rule), White rifled a double to the gap in right-center field which plated Bettencourt with the go ahead run.  Junior centerfielder Jessica Laudati (Berkley, Mass.) followed with a double to left scoring White with a big insurance marker.

Kenyon was able to push across a run in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2, but White induced a ground out to end the game and give BSU the dramatic win.

Junior right-hander Maddy Stark (Glenview, Ill.) suffered her first loss of the season in the circle for the Ladies despite pitching well.  Stark (4-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with a walk and 13 strikeouts.

St. John Fisher 8, Bridgewater State 0

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Junior righthander Lauren Wesolowski (Lancaster, N.Y.) tossed a complete game, one-hitter to lead the St. John Fisher College softball team to an 8-0 victory over Bridgewater State University on Saturday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.

The Cardinals improve to 8-2 with the win, while the Bears even their record at 1-1.

Wesolowski (3-1) gave up just a two-out single in the first to BSU junior centerfielder Jessica Laudati (Berkley, Mass.).  She then closed out the game by retiring the next 19 batters in a row.  Wesolowski fanned four and induced 11 ground ball outs.

Fisher was aided in the first by two fielding errors in the inning followed by a passed ball which allowed junior third baseman Meghan Burns (Delmar, N.Y.) to score the first run of the game.

After scoring one more in the second, Fisher doubled its score to 4-0 in the third inning on RBI's credited to sophomore Olivia Fusilli (Penfield, N.Y.) and junior right fielder Christina Sakran (Syracuse, N.Y.).

Senior catcher Jessica D'Angelo (Jamestown, N.Y.) helped give Fisher a 5-0 advantage one inning later as her double brought around sophomore second baseman Lauren Owens (Holmes, N.Y.).

The score would remain 5-0 until the sixth inning when RBI singles from sophomore centerfielder Jessie Smyrski (Rutland, Vt.) and Fusilli put Fisher up 7-0.  D'Angelo capped off the scoring in the seventh with an RBI single which plate Burns who had reached on an error.

D'Angelo earned her second RBI of the game to bring home Burns for the final run of the game in the seventh inning.

BSU freshman pitcher Kathleen Bailey (Bayport, N.Y.) gave up eight runs on 16 hits with a pair of strikeouts. She did not walk anybody and hit a batter.  Bailey (0-1) was hurt by four Bear errors, which led to three of the runs being unearned, as well as a lack of run support in her collegiate debut.

The Bears' Florida schedule continues on Sunday morning when they take on Milwaukee School of Engineering at nine followed by Elms College at 11.
