Softball Splits Twinbill with UMass Boston

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University and visiting UMass Boston split a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Park.  The host Bears won the first game, 10-1, in six innings, while the Beacons posted an 11-7 victory in game two.

Bridgewater's record now stands at 12-4, while UMass is 6-5 on the season.

The Bears used a seven-run fifth inning to turn game one into a rout. 

Brianna Strecker (Waterford, Conn.) belted a two-run homer and Jennifer Shaw (Brockton, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI to pace the BSU offense in the opener.  Melissa Harmon (Shrewsbury, Mass.) added a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with a double, a run and two RBI.

The Bears took advantage of four Beacon errors which led to eight of the ten runs being unearned.

Amber White (Middleboro, Mass.) picked up the complete game win in the circle for Bridgewater State.  White (7-1) allowed just one unearned run on seven hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

Kara Willis (Burrillville, R.I.) suffered the loss for UMass as she surrendered ten runs (two earned) on six hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.  Willis slips to 3-2 on the season.

Lisa Polsonetti (Revere, Mass.) went 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead the Beacons in game one.

Poor defensive play continued to hamper both teams in game two as the squads combined to make nine errors with Bridgewater committing six of them.

UMass banged out ten hits in the game led by Samantha Hemstock (Northford, Conn.) who went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Maria Nasta (Andover, Mass.) chipped in with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate as she doubled twice, scored three runs and drove in one. Polsonetti had two more hits (2-for-5) for the visitors and scored two runs.

Michelle Zullo (Everett, Mass.) went the distance to pick up her third win of the season.  Zullo (3-2) allowed seven runs (four earned) on 12 hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Strecker, Harmon and Jocelyn Bettencourt (Plymouth, Mass.) notched two-hits apiece to lead the Bears' 12-hit attack in game two.  Bettencourt went 2-for-3 with a triple, double, a run and an RBI.

Meghan Dunn (Colchester, Conn.) took the loss in the circle giving up eight runs (six earned) on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.  Dunn (5-3) walked two and struck out three.  White allowed three runs (two earned) on just one hit in 3 1/3 innings of relief.
