Softball Splits MASCAC Twinbill with Framingham State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Bridgewater State College and Framingham State College split a MASCAC softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at BSC's Alumni Park.  Bridgewater State took game one by a score of 6-0, while Framingham earned the split with a 6-4 victory in the nightcap.

With the split, the Bears are now 16-7 on the season and 3-1 in the MASCAC.  Framingham has on overall mark of 4-18 with a 2-2 conference record.

BSC senior right-hander Alyssa Verronneau (Acushnet, MA) tossed a complete game two-hit shutout to lead the Bears to the opening game win.  Verronneau (7-3) walked two, struck out 12 and allowed just one base runner to reach second base.

The Bears tallied two runs in the second inning as sophomore Kate Youngstrom (Holden, MA) plated the first run with an RBI double.  Youngstrom would come around to score later in the inning on a throwing error.

BSC added two more runs in the fourth on two-run single by sophomore Heather McPherson (Mansfield, MA).  Junior Lauren Cucinotta (Franklin, MA) notched an RBI double in the fifth and sophomore Bridget Engwer (Wrentham, MA) plated Cucinotta with a sacrifice fly to round out the scoring.

Cucinotta paced Bridgewater's nine-hit attack in the opener as she went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base to go along with her RBI double. McPherson finished 2-for-4 with her two runs batted in.

Seniors Colleen Clancy (Lynn, MA) and Liz Ranton (Milton, MA) had the only two hits in the game for the Rams. Freshman Alysia Morrissette (Ware, MA) suffered the loss in the circle as she went the distance.

In game two, Framingham jumped out to a 3-1 lead thanks to an RBI triple in the first by junior Kelsey Curley (Wilbraham, MA) and a two-run homer by senior Katelyn Pacheco (Acushnet, MA) in the second.

The Bears responded with a three-run third inning to take a 4-3 lead.  Senior shortstop Rachael Sprague (Duxbury, MA) knocked in a pair of runs with a two-run single, while Engwer knocked in the go ahead run later in the inning with an RBI single.

Sophomore Andrea DiTerlizzi (Shrewsbury, MA) came on to pitch for Framingham after Engwer had given the BSC the lead.  DiTerlizzi would shut down the Bears the rest of the way as she allowed just two hits and a walk over 4 1/3 innings of relief.

The Rams would retake the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a two-out bases loaded single by freshman Katie Donovan (Holden, MA).  Framingham would add a big insurance run in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Curley.

DiTerlizzi, who was making just her fourth appearance of the season, picked up her first win of the year.

Junior Jamie Ducinski (Duxbury, MA) was saddled with the loss in relief of senior starter Stephanie Pierce (Worcester, MA). Ducinski (2-1) entered the game with the Bears trailing 3-1 in the top of the third. She gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks in four innings of work.

Clancy, Curley and freshman Christy Ulak (Rehoboth, MA had two hits apiece for the Rams in game two.

Sprague paced the Bears in game two as she went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs batted in.  Senior Allie LeBlanc (Somerset, MA) went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Bridgewater State will travel to Springfield College on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader with the Pride.  Game one is slated to get underway at 3:30 PM.  Framingham will host a doubleheader with UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday beginning at 3.
