Kevin McBirney Named MASCAC Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University senior Kevin McBirney has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.

McBirney captured top honors in the 1,000-meter run with a school-record time of 2:29.42 this past weekend at the Branwen Smith-King Invitational hosted by Tufts University. The East Bridgewater, Massachusetts product eclipsed the previous BSU standard of 2:29.69 set by Andy Sukeforth in 2012 as he qualified for both the NEICAAA Championships and DIII New England Championships in the event.

McBirney, who helped lead the Bears to a third-place finish in the team standings at the meet, also ran a leg on the second-place 4x800-meter relay squad which posted a time of 8:25.16.

The MASCAC Track Athlete of the Week honor marks the tenth of McBirney's career including six indoor distinctions. He has also earned MASCAC Runner of the Week accolades nine times over the past two cross country seasons.

The BSU men's track & field team will compete on Friday (9:00 AM) at the River Hawk Invitational hosted by UMass Lowell and held at The Track at New Balance.
