
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University junior Tom Ayson has been selected as the Little East Conference (LEC) Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
A native of Plymouth, Massachusetts, Ayson went 2-1 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles competition in three matches for the Bears last week which included a pair of Little East Conference triumphs against the University of Southern Maine and VTSU Castleton.
Ayson earned a 6-1, 6-3 straight set victory at second singles over Azam Jiwa of Southern Maine and moved up to the top flight to post a 7-5, 6-0 straight set triumph over Castleton's Miki Almirall. He also teamed with sophomore Khiem Nguyen (Burlington, Vt.) for an 8-4 win at first doubles against the Huskies and an 8-4 first doubles victory against the Spartans.
Through six matches this season, Ayson is 3-3 in singles play competing mostly at the second flight with a 2-0 Little East mark. He is also 3-3 in doubles play with a 2-0 LEC record competing exclusively at number one.
Over his first two seasons with the Bears, Ayson is 10-7 (6-1 LEC) in singles play and 11-8 (6-1 LEC) in doubles.
The BSU men's tennis team is currently 3-3 on the season and a perfect 2-0 in the Little East standings. The Bears travel to Curry College on Wednesday afternoon for a 3:30 match with the Colonels.
