MARION, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University finished a weekend sweep in the Little East Conference on Sunday afternoon.
After opening the conference schedule with a road win over the University of Southern Maine Saturday, the Bears improved to 2-0 with a 9-0 victory over Vermont State Castleton just over 24 hours later.
The match was moved from the BSU campus to the Marion Indoor Tennis Club due to the weather.
BSU (3-3) has won all five matches against Vermont State Castleton (2-3, 0-2 conference) in a series that began in 2019.
Junior Tom Ayson (Plymouth, Mass.) moved up to No. 1 singles and defeated senior Miki Almirall (Barcelona, Spain), 7-5, 6-0.
Ayson also paired with sophomore Khiem Nguyen (Burlington, Vt.) for an 8-4 win at first doubles over freshman Tanner Ciufo (Rutland, Vt.) and freshman Remy Maynard.
Nguyen won at No. 2 singles over Ciufo, 6-0, 6-0, while senior Matthew Krampf (Littleton, Mass.) was a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 winner at No. 3 singles over Maynard.
Freshman Tyle Rocchio (Attleboro, Mass.) won at No. 4 singles, defeating graduate student Ben Chilkott (West Pawlet, Vt.), 6-0, 6-0, and sophomore Anthony Lucas (Weymouth, Mass.) won at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-3, over freshman Valero Echegoyen (Zaragoza, Spain), 6-0, 6-3.
Junior Ryan Hebert (Taunton, Mass.) took No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0, over senior Dylan Shiland (Sherman, Conn.).
BSU's No. 2 doubles team of Krampf and Lucas was an 8-2 winner over Almirall and Echegoyen while Rocchio and Hebert prevailed at No. 3 doubles, 8-0, over Chilkott and Shiland.
The Bears will play at Curry College on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. while the Spartans face Salem State in Vermont on Saturday at noon.
