BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Roger Williams University men's soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals less than five minutes apart to defeat host Bridgewater State University.
The Hawks, ranked fourth in the United Soccer Coaches Division III Region Two poll, improved to 6-2-1 with a 2-1 victory over the Bears at Mazzaferro Field Wednesday night.
BSU is now 2-3-2, including 0-2-1 at home. Roger Williams owns a 15-11-4 advantage over the Bears in a series that began in 1979.
After a scoreless first half, BSU took a 1-0 lead early at 51:28 when junior Filippo Mucci (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) scored from junior Ryan Healy (Cork, Ireland) and Dominek Borden (New Bedford, Mass).
Borden sent a cross from the left side to Healy just inside the six. Healy made a one-touch pass to an oncoming Mucci who buried a left-footed shot inside the far post from about 10 yards out. Mucci is tied for the team lead in goals with three.
The Hawks needed less than six minutes to tie the game on a goal by sophomore Tyler Jastrab (Johnston, R.I.), his third score of the season.
A long cross by John Fogarty (Scituate, Mass.) toward the back post was converted with a one-timer by Jastrab under the crossbar at 57:00. Dylan Thomas (Norwalk, Conn.) also assisted on the goal.
Roger Williams took the lead at 61:47 when junior Max Patenaude (Pepperell, Mass.) scored his second goal of the season from junior Murphy Malone (Cheshire, Conn.) and Bowen.
Malone sent a long volley to the top of the 18 and Tommy Bowen (Manchester, Mass.) deflected the ball to Patenaude, who delivered a shot off the right post and into the net.
BSU had an opportunity to tie the game with less than five minutes to go, but a shot from in front of the net went wide left.
Bears' senior goalkeeper Lukas Ekmanis (Baxter, Tenn.) made three saves while Roger Williams' junior netminder Hogan Cain (Nottingham, N.H.) had seven stops.
The Hawks held a 14-13 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
The Bears play their second Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday at 5 p.m., hosting Fitchburg State University at Mazzaferro Field. That continues a stretch of the Bears playing five of six games at home.
Roger Williams is at the University of Hartford at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
