Men's Soccer Battles UMass Boston to 1-1 Draw

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's soccer team played visiting UMass Boston to a 1-1 draw on Monday night at Mazzaferro Field.

The Bears, who got a late goal from senior defender Justin Silva (North Attleboro, Mass.) to secure the tie, see their record go to 1-2-2 on the season, while the Beacons are now 2-1-3. UMass holds a 12-9-1 lead in the all-time series.

UMass senior forward Josh DeAlmeida (Revere, Mass.) converted on a give-and-go to open the scoring in the 38th minute. DeAlmeida sent a short pass to junior midfielder Elijah Elliot (Dorchester, Mass.) at the top of the 18. Elliott chipped the ball over the BSU defense to DeAlmeida who tapped the ball past the converging BSU netminder for his third goal of the season.

Silva's header goal with just 4:39 left to play in the contest knotted the score at 1-1. On a designed play of a restart, junior midfielder Ryan Healy (Cork, Ireland) slipped a pass to sophomore midfielder Nicholas Ribeiro (Bellingham, Mass.) on the right side. Ribeiro sent a perfectly placed cross into the box that was headed home by Silva.

The goal marked Silva's first of the season while Ribeiro and Healy each recorded their first assists of the 2024 campaign.

UMass held a 12-8 shot advantage for the game as well as a slight 4-3 edge in corner kick attempts.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matheus Rodrigues (Edgartown, Mass.) made four saves between the pipes for the Bears while senior netminder JJ Devine (Halifax, Mass.) turned aside two shots for the Beacons.

Both teams open conference play on Saturday. The Bears head to Worcester State University to take on the Lancers at 11:00 AM while the Beacons host Little East Conference foe Plymouth State University at noon.
