Men's Soccer Battles Wentworth to 1-1 Draw

By Jim Fenton

BOSTON, Mass. -- For the second time in five all-time meetings, the Bridgewater State University and Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer teams played to a draw.

The Bears and Leopards each netted a first-half goal, but that was the extent of the scoring in a 1-1 tie Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.

Wentworth holds a 2-1-2 edge over BSU in a series that began in 2019. The teams also tied, 0-0, two years ago in Boston.

BSU is now 1-1-1 this season while Wentworth is 1-2-1.

The Leopards took a 1-0 lead 11:08 into the game when freshman Younes Henniche (Woburn, Mass.) scored the first goal of his collegiate career.

The unassisted score came on Wentworth's first shot on goal of the game. Henniche took advantage of a BSU turnover and his shot from the top of the box went into the upper left corner for the early lead.

The Bears tied it at 35:50 when sophomore Hector Bucio (Easton, Mass.) registered his second goal of the season.

A free kick by senior Nicolas Matias (Framingham, Mass.) was knocked away by Wentworth graduate student goalkeeper Noah Lawless (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) but Bucio headed the rebound into the net near the right post.

There was no more scoring in the final 54 minutes as the Bears and Leopards settled for their second tie in the last three years.

BSU senior goalie Lukas Ekmanis (Baxter, Tenn.) made four saves in his second start of the season.

Lawless had eight saves for Wentworth. The Leopards were outshot, 17-15, while the Bears had a 9-5 edge in shots on goal.

BSU is on the road again Tuesday night, traveling to Waltham to play Brandeis University at 7 p.m.

Wentworth continues a stretch of five straight games at home Tuesday, meeting Emerson at 6 p.m.
