Ghelfi Leads Men's Soccer to 2-0 MASCAC Win Over Fitchburg

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Sophomore forward Brett Ghelfi (Halifax, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Bridgewater State University men's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over visiting Fitchburg State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup on Homecoming Saturday at rain-soaked Swenson Field.

The Bears improve to 2-6-1 on the season and 1-2 in the MASCAC, while the Falcons fall to 1-7-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play. Bridgewater State holds a 26-14-6 advantage in the all-time series which began back in 1978.

Ghelfi opened the scoring in the 38th minute with his first goal of the season. Senior defender Joseph Madden Jr. (Milford, Mass.) slipped a through ball between two defenders and Ghelfi buried a left-footed shot inside the right post from ten yards out. Junior midfielder Ethan DeMelo (Acushnet, Mass.) also assist on the marker as his give and go with Madden got the play started.

Ghelfi extened the lead to 2-0 with just 1:38 left to play in the first half. Junior defender Jacob Ramos (New Bedford, Mass.) sent a long volley inside the 18. A Fitchburg defender attempted to head the ball out, but it went right to Ghelfi who turned and first a shot inside the left post from 15 yards out.

The Falcons nearly broke up the shutout bid late in the second half as freshman forward Juan Sambrano (Burlington, Mass.) curled one off the post in the 86th minute.

Bridgewater finished with a 20-10 shot advantage for the game, while Fitchburg held a 5-3 edge in corner kick attempts. The Falcons were flagged for seven offsides on the afternoon.

BSU senior goalkeeper William Russell (Sandwich, Mass.) made two saves to record his second win and second shutout of the season. Senior netminder Collin Robson (North Billerica, Mass.) turned aside four shots in the setback for the visitors.

In upcoming action, the Bears entertain the Seahawks of Salve Regina University on Wednesday night at seven, while the Falcons travel to Nichols College on Tuesday afternoon to take on the Bison at three.
