Men's Soccer Edged by Roger Williams in Overtime, 1-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. –Senior midfielder Michael Oliveira (Waterville, Maine) potted the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the visiting Roger Williams University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Bridgewater State University on Tuesday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Hawks improve to 7-2-2 on the season, while the host Bears fall to 1-8-1. Roger Williams is now 10-11-4 against Bridgewater State since 1980.

Oliveira capitalized on a BSU turnover in the 98th minute as he buried a shot into the top-left corner of the net from 25 yards out.

Bridgewater State held a 19-11 shot advantage for the game, while corner kick attempts were even at eight apiece. The Bears registered three shots in the overtime session, while the Hawks had two including Oliveira's game-winner.

Roger Williams junior goalkeeper James Lee (Sudbury, Mass.) made eight saves to notch his second win and of the season and first shutout.

Senior netminder Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) turned aside three shots in the setback for the Bears. Morgado made an outstanding save on a bicycle kick attempt by junior forward Ryan Miller (Hillsdale, N.J.) from the top of the six in the 68th minute to keep the game scoreless.

Two of the Bears' better scoring opportunities came in the latter stages of the second half. Sophomore midfielder Dan Rickson (West Warren, Mass.) nearly finished a perfectly place cross from freshman Will Halben (Attleboro, Mass.) in the 76th minute, but his one-timer sailed over the crossbar. Junior forward Kevin Roberts (Medway, Mass.) had a header attempt sail over the bar off a cross in the 83rd minute.

In upcoming action, the Bears entertain Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) rival Mass. Maritime Academy on Friday afternoon at four. The Hawks travel to Salve Regina University on Saturday for a noontime Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) game with the Seahawks.
