WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior defender Maggie Nailor (Dartmouth, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Worcester State University field hockey team to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on Friday night in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) affair at Coughlin Field.
The Lancers, who picked up their first win, improve to 1-6 on the season and 1-1 in the MASCAC, while the Bears fall to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Worcester has won each of the last six meetings of the two teams and is 22-24 versus the Bears since 1983.
Nailor's game-winning tally, her first goal of the season, came 6:47 into overtime as she tipped home a shot from junior midfielder Charlotte MacGregor (Bellingham, Mass.) off a penalty corner.
Junior midfielder Allison Keenan (Marlborough, Mass.) opened the scoring for the Lancers with 8:15 remaining in the first quarter converting off an assist from senior forward Natalya Morin (Barre, Mass.). Morin corralled the rebound of her own shot and slipped a pass to the front of the cage to Keenan who delivered shot into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
The Bears evened the score at 1-1 with just 58 seconds remaining until halftime. Off a penalty corner, sophomore midfielder Abbie Zuber (Westport, Mass.) collected a return pass from freshman forward Taylor Carter (East Walpole, Mass.) and deposited a tough angle shot inside the far post. The goal marked Zuber's fourth of the 2024 campaign.
Junior forward Lexi James (Ipswich, Mass.) staked the visitors to a 2-1 lead 2:25 into the third quarter. Off a scramble in front of the net, James tucked a shot over the goal line for her third marker of the season.
Morin potted the equalizer 76 seconds into the fourth quarter off an assist from junior midfield Kaelin Coleman (Attleboro, Mass.). For Morin, it was her team-leading third strike of the year.
The Lancers held a 22-7 shot advantage for the game as well as an 11-5 edge in penalty corners.
Junior goalkeeper Brianna Gagnon (Tewksbury, Mass.) made ten saves in the setback for the Bears. Senior netminder Madison Ferrara (Somerset, Mass.) turned aside four shots for the hosts.
The MASCAC schedule continues next week for both teams. The Bears entertain Framingham State University on Tuesday night at seven o'clock, while the Lancers travel to Fitchburg State University also on Tuesday to take on the Falcons at four.
