WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University field hockey team remained winless in its all-time series with Wellesley College Saturday afternoon.

The Bears fell to 0-8 all-time against the Blue with an 8-0 non-conference loss at Butler Stadium.

BSU is 1-3 while Wellesley improved to 3-2. It was the first meeting between the two programs since Sept. 11, 2019 in a series that started in 2013.

The Blue held a 22-1 shots on goal advantage and took 42 shots while the Bears managed only one.

Wellesley was led by the four-goal performance by senior River Schiff (Potomac, Md.), who scored three in a row starting in the second period and continuing into the third period.

The Blue held a 2-0 lead after one period with senior Camille Newman (New York, N.Y.) starting the scoring at 5:26, assisted by junior Katie Golla (Oak Park, Ill.). It was Newman's first goal of the season.

Less than three minutes later, freshman Claudia Summers (San Diego, Calif.) netted an unassisted goal, her second of the season, at 8:09.

The Bears were behind, 4-0, at halftime after Schiff scored twice in the second period.

Her first goal came at 24:55 with sophomore Alex Butulis (Raleigh, N.C.) assisting, and Schiff scored again at 26:26 with freshman Madeline Hamstra (Houston, Texas) setting the goal up for the Blue.

Wellesley made it 5-0 at 40:22 in the third period when Schiff, assisted by senior Maya Benway (Harvard, Mass.), scored again.

The Blue added three goals in the final period with Summers registering her second goal of the day at 47:16 to get the scoring going.

Schiff followed with her sixth goal of the season from senior Sara Maniscaico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) at 52:20 and Butulis finished with an unassisted goal at 54:18.

Wellesley freshman goalkeeper Maddie Miller (Ann Arbor, Mich.) made one stop while recording the win.

Junior Brianna Gagnon (Tewksbury, Mass.) started in net for BSU and stopped nine shots in three periods with Catherine Daoulas (Marshfield, Mass.) recording five saves in the final 15 minutes.

BSU opens the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference season next Saturday, hosting Salem State University at noon at Mazzaferro Field.

Wellesley is back in action Tuesday night when it faces Bowdoin.
