Field Hockey Drops 1-0 Decision to Southern Maine on Senior Day

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Junior midfielder Maggie Redman (Alfred, Maine) broke a scoreless tie with 5:34 remaining in regulation to lift the visiting University of Southern Maine field hockey team to a 1-0 Little East Conference victory over Bridgewater State University on Saturday at rain-soaked Swenson Field. The game marked the regular season finale for both teams.

The Huskies improve to 12-7 on the season and 9-3 in the Little East with their sixth straight win, while the Bears fall to 8-8 overall and 6-6 in conference play. Souther Maine is seeded third in next week's Little East Tournament and will host a quarterfinal round game on Tuesday against #6 Fitchburg State University. Bridgewater State is seeded seventh in the tournament and will travel to #2 Keene State College on Tuesday evening to take on the Owls at 6:30.

With time winding down in the second half, Redman tucked a shot inside the left post off a rebound moments after BSU senior netminder Allison Chappell (Raynham, Mass.) made a nice diving stop of a Brooke Dugan (Thomaston, Maine) shot.

Bridgewater State finished with a 16-13 shot advantage for the game as well as a 7-4 edge in penalty corner attempts.

Freshman Lindsay Pych (West Milford, N.J.) and sophomore McKenzie Cormier (Hiram, Maine) combined for the shutout in goal for the Huskies as they each played a half. Pych got the start and made three saves, while Cormier turned aside eight shot to pick up her fourth win of the season.

Chappell made six saves in the setback for the Bears. Bridgewater also received a defensive save from grad student Katherine McKenna (Wilmington, Mass.).

BSU senior forward Samantha Hayes (Norwood, Mass.) led all players with nine shots including six on frame.

Prior to the game, the Bears held Senior Day festivities as Chappell, Hayes and McKenna were honored along with fellow seniors Kathryn Jacobson (Norfolk, Mass.), Julianne Kilduff (Bellingham, Mass.) and Alexandra Zoebisch (Plymouth, Mass.).
