NEWPORT, R.I. -- Freshman Bethany
Bush (Littleton, MA) recorded a natural hat trick in the
first half to help Bridgewater State College defeat Salve Regina
University, 4-2, in a non-conference field hockey game on Thursday
afternoon.
Bridgewater State (9-3) jumped out quickly, as sophomore
Stephanie Barry (Pembroke, MA) scored just 70
seconds into the game. Junior Kelly Duchemin
(Mashpee, MA) picked up the assist on Barry’s goal.
After Barry’s goal, Bush scored unassisted tallies in the 10th and 21st minutes before notching the natural hat trick in the 32nd minute. Duchemin got her second assist of the game on Bush’s third goal as the Bears carried much of the action in the first half.
The Seahawks (6-6) got two of the goals back, as senior Caroline Galligan (West Newbury, MA) scored her team-leading eighth goal of the year in the 48th minute. Freshman Brittany Boles (Forestdale, MA) got the first goal of her collegiate career just two minutes later.
Salve Regina appeared to make it a one-goal game on a penalty stroke by senior Whitney Bushee (Duxbury, MA) with 12 minutes remaining, but the officials ruled the ball did not go in. Sophomore Eileen Carabetta (Southington, CT) came off the bench and played a strong game in midfield for the Seahawks.
Both teams play again on Saturday. Salve Regina returns to The
Commonwealth Coast Conference action when it hosts Regis (Mass.)
College (1 p.m.), while Bridgewater State travels to Western
Connecticut State University (12 p.m.) for a Little East Conference
game.
