Shane Drake Named MASCAC Football Special Teams Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- For the second straight week, Bridgewater State University graduate punter and kicker Shane Drake has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Football Special Teams Player of the Week.

Drake averaged 43.7 yards on three punts with a long of 49 yards, two inside the 20 and one fair catch in the Bears’ 42-7 MASCAC and Homecoming win over Worcester State University. The Franklin, Massachusetts product also booted a 19-yard field goal and averaged 60 yards on seven kickoffs with a pair of touchbacks.

Through five games this season, Drave is averaging 42.9 yards on 15 punts with a long of 54 yards, five punts inside the 20 and four fair catches. He is also averaging 60.1 yards on 25 kickoffs with eight touchbacks and has converted all three of his field goal attempts.

Drake presently leads the MASCAC in field goal percentage. He is also second in fair catches, tied for second in made field goals and ranks fourth in punts inside the 20. Drake would also lead the conference (and rank 11th in all of Division III) in punting average but does not have enough attempts to qualify.

In 36 games over four seasons with the Bears, Drake is averaging 42.0 yards on 97 career punts with 25 inside the 20 and 15 punts of 50-plus yards. He is also averaging 57.8 yards on 184 career kickoffs with 47 touchbacks, and has converted 10 of 17 field goal attempts

Drake is currently the Bears' all-time leader in punting average. Last year, he set the Bears' single-season punting record as he averaged 42.5 yards on 39 punts.

The MASCAC weekly honor marks the sixth of Drake's career.

The BSU football team is currently 2-3 on the season and 2-2 in the MASCAC. Following a bye week, the Bears travel to Western Connecticut State University on Saturday, October 19th for a five o'clock MASCAC game with the Wolves.
