Ryan Flaherty Named MASCAC Baseball Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University junior first baseman Ryan Flaherty has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Baseball Player of the Week.

A native of Duxbury, Massachusetts, Flaherty batted .524 (11-21) with three home runs, three doubles, four walks, two stolen bases, ten runs and 13 RBI in a 6-1 week for the Bears. He also posted a .556 on base percentage as well as a 1.095 slugging percentage.

Flaherty went 3-for-6 with a home run, a double, a walk, a sacrifice fly, four runs and four RBI in a MASCAC sweep of Mass. Maritime; 7-for-12 with a home run, two doubles, a walk, two stolen bases, five runs and eight RBI as the Bears swept a three-games MASCAC series with MCLA; and 1-for-3 with a home run and two walks in a 14-11 setback to Wentworth.

Through 34 games this season, Flaherty is batting .311 (42-135) with six doubles, 14 home runs, 12 walks, a pair of stolen bases, 29 runs and 53 RBI. He has also been hit by a pitch three times and checks in with a .368 on base percentage as well as a .667 slugging percentage.

Flaherty currently leads the MASCAC in home runs and ranks second in RBI and total bases. He is also third among the conference leaders in extra base hits (20) and at bats, tied for third in sacrifice flies (5), tied for fifth in games played, seventh in slugging percentage and ninth in hits.

On a national level, Flaherty is presently eighth in all of Division III in home runs per game (0.41) and 15th in RBI per game (1.56).

Flaherty's 14 home runs and 53 RBI rank second among the Bears' single-season leaders. John Kiely holds the program record with 15 home runs in 1986, while Jeremy Winters knocked in a school-record 59 runs in 2003.

In 76 games over his first two seasons with the Bears, Flaherty has a career batting average of .337 (98-291) with 19 doubles, 20 home runs, 38 walks, seven stolen bases, 73 runs and 98 RBI. He also checks in with a career slugging percentage of .608.

The MASCAC Player of the Week accolade marks the first of Flaherty's career.

The BSU baseball team is currently 23-11 on the season and 14-3 in the MASCAC. The Bears, who currently sit atop the conference standings, travel to Fitchburg State University this afternoon for a three o'clock  MASCAC game with the Falcons.
